We Loved: The gourmet sausages and regional Greek wines

Karamanlidika tou Fani is the kind of place that you always hope to find when you travel, a hidden gem with authentic food and drink. Oozing with tradition, style and old world charm, this meze/deli house has won the tick of approval from locals of where to eat in Athens.

Housed in a restored neoclassical building with indoor and outdoor seating, many of the original features remain, such as the frescos. There is a well-priced menu including hot and cold meze plates, deli meats, aged Greek cheeses and more sizable dishes too.

Other highlights include, small gourmet sausages, home made savoury pies, dolmades and ‘mamas’ homemade baklava. There is a solid offering of ouzo, wines and Tsipouro. The cherry flavoured soda, sweetened with stevia shows they are very much with the times and have carefully considered all parts of the menu. The food is prepared with an equal amount of love and care. Learn more about the history and heritage of this menu here.

Why Athens Tip: Try their regional wines that feature the ‘Malagousia’ Greek grape variety, that is not easy to find. A white wine that is fragrant and soft.
